The Banting Research Foundation sponsored the 2016 Friesen Prize program, where Dr Janet Rossant was awarded the Henry G Friesen International Prize in Health Research.
Dr Rossant is a world-renowned expert in developmental biology. She is currently the President and Scientific Director of the Gairdner Foundation, and formerly was Chief of Research at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. In 2015 she was made a Companion of the Order of Canada for advancing the global understanding of embryo development and stem cell biology, and for her national and international leadership in health science. She received the 2015 Canada Gairdner Wightman Award for her outstanding scientific contributions to developmental biology and for her exceptional international leadership in stem cell biology and policy-making, and in advancing research programs for children’s illnesses.
Early in her research career, Dr Rossant received a Banting Research Foundation grant to support her work in the role of genes in embryo development. She credits the early support of the Foundation in setting her course toward later outstanding accomplishments and awards.
The Friesen Prize, established in 2005 by the Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (FCIHR) recognizes exceptional innovation by a visionary health leader of international stature.
